A 2020 Trump election victory would have made for an inauguration that would have looked more like a coronation.
His power would have been cemented, and the real pain would come soon after.
Even with the same results in Congress, a second term would open the floodgates to a sadistic regime, unconcerned with anything but his will and power. All those great ‘patriots’ would suddenly find themselves in the position of loyal subjects.
I feel that Mike Pence would have been ousted and, in an unsurprising move, the 25th Amendment would be summarily ignored as Trump would never let Nancy Pelosi anywhere closer to the Executive Branch than she already is. I’m completely certain that he would have chosen Ivanka to be the first female US Vice President, but this would be a setup to creating a dynasty.
The line of succession would move from officers of govt to his direct descendants in a move that would be justified by his ‘amazing first term’ and the will of the people via his historic election victory. I believe he would have taken that as a clear path to making sure presidential elections can never be stolen again if the people already have what they want.
A man that enthralled with his own mystique would be too blinded by the possibilities to reflect on how damaging this would be to the country and to his family in the short and long term. Being able to do as he pleased would also give him the notion that he could fire every Democratic member of the Legislative Branch and shrink the Supreme Court to just the conservative judges- or scrap the whole thing and make the White House the one and only seat of power in the nation.
I’m willing to think that last idea would have appealed to him the most.
He would have turned the US Capitol into a revisionist monument of American Greatness, with his MAGA movement as the centerpiece, of course. I would even venture to think he’d try to move the whole apparatus down to Florida since I think our newly anointed despot doesn’t like the cold very much, or at least any weather that inhibits golf.
Any legislation that impedes capitalistic expansion would be rolled back, environmental protections would be torn up, trade agreements, sanctions would all go away. Most protected lands would be open to the highest bidder, Reservations would be absorbed and their population would have to go through a citizenship process that would be drastically different than anything we’ve ever seen.
I would say that most non-white people would get a choice: “Conform or leave”. Loyalty would be tested at every turn; punishment would be severe.
He would groom Ivanka to take over in time. Considering her age now, she could feasibly be in power long enough for one of her children to be old enough to take over, with grandchildren possibly in tow.
Lord Trump’s passing would lead to a monument being made in his honor (one of many, I assume), where he and his line would be put to rest like the kings and queens of yore. Well, at least those who succeed him; so nevermind The Disappointment, Whats-His-Name, The Ugly One, and Melania’s Kid!
Hallmarks in his life would be made into new national holidays and replace others completely. People would gather in the streets on Coronation Day and Lord Trump’s Birthday, those would be biggies. His face would be on the cash, his life history (heavily edited) would become required curriculum in schools, so many things would be named in his honor that there would be a strong case to rename the empire after him! Trumpistan, Donvana, Magalandia? Yikes, maybe not.
Some of you may think I’m being hyperbolic. But nothing I’ve ever seen from this man makes me think it hasn’t crossed his mind. Con men either break the law, or make their own to achieve their ends. Nothing short of making an entire country his personal sandbox would ever allow him to feel at ease because deep down he’s a frightened worm of a human being.
He already gave us a taste of what he’d do within the constraints of the presidency. Why wouldn’t he take it a step further and rework the system to something even closer to how he ran his businesses? Why wouldn’t he, as it all crumbled around him, turn tail and run and hide- most likely shoving Ivanka to the forefront. “Take care of this, princess. Daddy’s going golfing!” probably giving her fanny a squeeze on his way out the door!
Only at that last terrible moment, some event that would eclipse the Capitol riot would he even show a moment of remorse. Mind you, not for what he’d done, but for how it was perceived. “It’s not my fault!”
So would end his reign, and the rewriting of history would unfold.
